Denis Irwin | 1993-1994

Postby PES Stats Database » 2008 Dec 13, 21:41

Name: Denis Joseph Irwin

Club: Manchester United

Image

INFO:

The Mr. Reliable of Manchester United, a stunningly consistent player with a knack for set pieces, Denis Irwin was Manchester Unitedćs penalty supremo and also their best full-back, not only being defensively secure, but also having a fantastic work-rate and a competence across all aspects of footballing ability, being a great passer, crosser, dribbler and a fantastic defender. He also belted shots from miles out and could use either foot and play either Side Back position, usually being placed at Left back to accomodate a place in the side for both him and Gary Neville.

Lovely stats for a lovely player ;)

One thing though, could his SPS be higher? Seemed to have quite a bit of pace on his short passes, 81/82?

isn't defense 82 too much for a fullback?

what about the stars does he really really deserves them all?

Although 4 stars seems a lot of stars, I believe he does actually deserve these. I cannot confirm but United folklore says he only ever missed one penalty (?); but I have seen him score many. His slide tackling was excellent. His covering was noted as a crucial part of his game, and he would score maybe 1 great long effort a season. I guess 82 could be lowered; I'd say 80; but when or if you make him, you can decide for yourself.

After seing Manchester vs Don't Remeber Who (4-3) in ESPN Classic here's some points i finds debatable:

Defence: 82 - The top rated Premier SB is Brown with 79, G.Neville has 76, Zanetti has 74. I'd say Irwin's value is unfair looking at the ladders, u can see he is good but he's not a wall. And he has 2 defensive stars.

Stamina: 87 - Did he had such a lung at 33 or would he end the games really tired?

Swerve: 84 - FK's i saw from him didn't had much swerve, i'd go for a high green value.

Jump: 80 - Pretty good for a 33 yr old player who doesn't look very athletic but i didn't pay atention to that in the game.

Team Work: 84 - Maybe he could be a bit higher, he must have been one of the world's best SB when it came to fiting in the team, and by watching just a game u can see how he was a smart player.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with any of your points, I'm sorry because I like you work in the classics ;) . His defending was superior to Brwned, his stamina was also tremendous for a lad his age. His jump was quite good and his TW was certainly quite developed. His personality didn't make him stand out like Evra does, but if I were to choose between the two today I'm sure I'd know who to pick. Irwin is simply the best SB I've seen in a red shirt, mainly due to defensive stability and ALWAYS nullifying his winger. He was like a swiss clock, nothing fancy but incredibly reliable.

Choccy, i was asking for a raise in TW, i'm shure it should be at least at the same level as G. Neville, something like Zanetti maybe...

About the defense value i don't think there's another SB who doesn't play as CB who has been given such value, that's my main point. Was his taclking/positioning better than Neville's? And stamina is all because of his age.

I know this guy is a legend, and he is a reference in a team that is a reference by it's own. That's why i'd like to have his stats as accurate as possible. Besides, if i still had a TV i could be watching some of his games, i bet some of the users here do have a TV and ESPN Classic, some of them are even United fans so it's possible to do an accurate set for this guy. Some months ago i saw the extended highlights of a United win over Arsenal and the guy seemed to be all about teamwork and good crosses, he even had an assist that day. I wasn't "impressed" (though a good defender is not suposed to impress) but it seemed to me like he was the man who read the game better in the whole game. But that was just one game.

Maybe u could watch some games and do another set for him, when he was still full of piss and vinegar? ;)

defense is defiantly too high for a pure SB. Should come down to under 80.

Anyone have any problems to a lower def value? Something a long the lines of 78?

I didn't even notice that when I updated, my bad. Yes he is naturally right footed, could probably take WFA of 8 too.

Updated slightly. a younger Irwin actually had a a decent burst about him so era should be shortened.

You could also add Early Cross for him.
Most of this great crosses were from deep, with either foot.
He rarely crossed the ball from byline.

I could've sworn I'd proposed a raise in Irwin's DEF before, but after going through the posts in this thread that's apparently not the case. :?

Anyway, do you still maintain he's under an 80 for DEF, jurgens? I've always considered him a benchmark for DEF in fullbacks, honestly he was so clinical and so assured in his tackling and positioning, I'm confident he would've been an excellent centre back were it not for his lack of aerial presence. There's not a fullback to this day that I think strikes the perfect balance between offensive prowess and defensive stability like Irwin did, imo he was better at taking wingers on one-on-one than even Ashley Cole, who seems to be the defensive reference point for most modern day Premiership fullbacks. I've never come across a fullback who was so astute and with the same sense of impeccable timing in the tackle, so I'm genuinely surprised no one's suggested a DEF raise.

Maybe it's just me though - despite being an Arsenal fan, I really idolized this guy when I was younger, which says it all, I suppose.

No. That post was made two years ago, back when we had messed up scales and zanetti was on a 76.
