Winston Bogarde | 1994-1995

Postby PES Stats Database » 2008 Dec 12, 23:10

Club: AFC Ajax

You probably remember him from his 4 years at Chelsea, in which he played 11 games  , basically his career at Chelsea was rememberable because only weeks after signing his contract with the club, the newly-appointed manager Claudio Ranieri wanted him to leave! However Bogarde decided to stay at Chelsea honouring his contract to the letter even though Chelsea tried everything to get rid off him demoting him to the Reserves and youth teams,He turned up to training sessions every day and did whatever was required off him. OIn the end, he only appeared eleven times during his four-year contract, reportedly earning £40,000 a week during this period. Worse still, Chelsea won a domestic trophy during this period triggering a bonus payment in agreement with his contract, despite Bogarde not featuring at all for Chelsea that season, however despite all this at Ajax Borgarde was a decent defender during his time at Ajax although he was rather lazy, he was a rock at the back with decent positoning and good timing of tackles.

Thanks for the stats.

I agree with Gerd about position.

And I thought Bogarde was left footed...

BOGARDE'S CV reads like a dream — Ajax, AC Milan and Barcelona are just three of the clubs he has played for. The left-footed Dutchman wandered into Stamford Bridge at the start of the 2000-2001 season, reportedly on the recommendation of fellow Holland international Mario Melchiot.

He was a left footed SB* occasional CB in van Gaal's preferred 3-4-3 but essentially a Left SB*
The perfect combination of technique, insight, personality and speed.

As I said in 2008, these set need an overhaul. In 1994/95 Bogarde played his first season as a defender. The season before this he played as a winger (scoring 11 goals) for Sparta. Bogarde had decent football ability, but after van Gaal wanted him as a SB he saw he could make more money using his strenght and street mentality (compare him to Drenthe, but maybe less talented but stronger/bigger) as a defender. He wasnt a natural defender, but has good timing for the tackle, a strong frame and the mentality to learn from van Gaals methods. I think defensively you could compare him to Abidal, also not brilliant, but due to his size, reasonable speed and tackling sometimes useful as CB too.

87 BB may be a bit high for this era, considering he became a bit bulkier in later years. I'd leave it at 86, taking into account his outstanding 190 cm and 88 kg. Not a big deal anyway. I also have my doubts about DEF 76... he was a deffensive SB but not really a very good defender, 76 DEF places him over lots and lots of classic SBs who, IMO, were better at defensive intelligence and movements than him. Of course his Barcelona displays may be also distorting my opinion too much, so take this suggestions with a grain of salt.

I made a set for his Barcelona years in my personal stats thread, although I admit it was more for fun than anything else  Ah, those days when he integrated the "infernal wings" of Barça, alongside Reiziger and Bolo Zenden :D

Looking at these stats one would conclude he is a Bruno Martins Indi clone!

Shouldn't mentality drop drastically to reflect his personality?
