Re: FORMATION

Postby jmg721 » 2009 Feb 13, 13:43

Don't Fellaini & Neville play completely different roles?

Fellaini is almost a SS at time while Neville is more of a DMF. How are they interchangeable :P

They are a really hard one. Cahill was starting up front by himself even when Saha was fit and on the bench.

I would almost say:
SS/AMF: Cahill/Fellaini
CF Yakubu/Cahill/Jo

With the two players upfront. The rest is fine.

How about this for the first post:

EVERTON
Image

GK: Howard
RCB: Jagielka (+)/Yobo/Heitinga
LCB: Distin
RB: Neill/Hibbert/Heitinga
LB: Baines
DM: Neville (c) (+)/Rodwell/Heitinga
CM: Cahill/Fellaini/Arteta (+)
RM: Osman/Pienaar
LM: Pienaar/Bilyaletdinov
SS: Fellaini/Cahill
CF: Saha/Yakubu/Jo

Left Corner: Arteta/Bilyaletdinov/Baines
Right Corner: Arteta/Bilyaletdinov/Baines
Long Free Kick: Arteta/Bilyaletdinov/Baines
Short Free Kick: Arteta/Bilyaletdinov/Baines
Penalties: Arteta/CF/Baines

*(+) - injured

Notes: The CF, SS, CM and DM positions randomly shift from left to right and vice versa between and during matches (eg: RDM, LCM, RSS, LCF -> LDM, RCM, LSS, RCF). Also Rodwell has also been played at CM recently but when he is played he should be moved deeper.

I always thought it was more like:

GK: Howard
CB: Jagielka/Yobo
CB: Lescott/Yobo
RB: Hibbert/Neville
LB: Baines/Lescott
DM: Neville (c)
CM: Fellaini/Arteta
RM: Arteta/Osman
LM: Pienaar
SS/AMF: Cahill/Fellaini
CF: Saha/Jo/Yakubu/Cahill

In that order

I think the players in my post above are pretty much spot on.

Even though earlier last season Fellaini was playing CM and Cahill SS in the more recent matches they've switched around to take advantage of Fellaini's height to deal with long balls.

btw what do you have any suggestions for the formation I posted above.

I find it very effective in Everton if you have the two wingers with a diagonal wide and diagonal to the centre arrow "<", and gets them playing a lot more realistic. The way they go wide and also cut into th ecentre an awful lot reflects very well. Try it.

Having watched Evertons matches this season I think Osman almost deserves to have a diagonal arrow cutting in as well as an arrow pointed directly to the centre as he has been cutting into the centre of the pitch like crazy.

I actually finds that works better if you actually move the player more central and then give him a direct forward and diagonal wide arrow. The opposite has the effect you look for, or at least for the way i play. I do a similar thing with Benayoun. It's all about getting the initial position for the player right.

This formation is pretty much perfect I would suggest moving it to the first post. All you need to do is just add some players, like Bilyaletdinov, L. Neill, and Heitinga to the lineup. Made some changes to the quote ;)

I updated my post from above with new alternative players. I have to admit I was holding back on changing them because of the ridiculous amount of alternatives needed due to injuries with in the squad.

It's hard to comment on the actual formation though because of the large amount of players used this season. The only change I'd make atm is to remove the foward arrow off the CF and shift him further back as Everton's CF's usually play more of a target man role and don't play in advanced positions.

Hopefully I'll be able to submit update the formation for this season once we get some stability in te starting line up.

Oh btw chanman, loving your work at updating the formations in the EPL as they're somewhat over looked.

- Slighty updated formation based on how Everton have played when a full squad has been available -

EVERTON
Image

GK: Howard
RCB: Jagielka/Heitinga
LCB: Distin
RB: Neville (c)
LB: Baines
RCM: Arteta
LCM: Fellaini (+)/Osman
RM: Donovan/Bilyaletdinov
LM: Pienaar
SS: Cahill
CF: Saha/Yakubu

Left Corner: Arteta/RM/Baines
Right Corner: Arteta/RM/Baines
Long Free Kick: Arteta/Baines
Short Free Kick: Arteta/Baines
Penalties: Arteta

*(+) - injured

Notes: Pienaar can play as an AM as an alternative to having a SS, with arrows pointing north and north-east to help him drift to the left. Donovan or Bilyaletdinov are then able to play at LM. Arteta is able to play at RM, however his east facing arrow should be removed. Osman is also able to play at RM with his north-east arrow being changed for a north facing arrow.

Are they currently playing with a 4-5-1 with Cahill as a CMF or still 4-4-1-1 with him as a SS?

I'd still say they're playing Cahill as a SS or at least a AM. Everton are basically playing the same formation as the one I posted above but with the RCM (Arteta) shifted slightly foward and the LCM becoming a DM (Heitinga or Neville) with a high defence arrow and shifting slightly back. Hibbert then slots into the RB slot if Neville moves into midfield.
