My opinion btw about his defence: he used to be a CB and I think he still has a decent defence on his flank. He really doesn't deserve a low 60's value and below 60 is just crazy. He's not the worst the SB in the Eredivisie right?
But like I said, I suggest we create a seperate topic for this discussion.

I agree, but then again all the Dutch followers should discuss the DEF ladders for SB in the Eredivisie. There are a few misjudgements/outdated players. Example Daan Bovenberg who DEF isnt that bad (for the Dutch League) sits on 67 while Vd Wiel has 70. Daley Blind with all respect doesnt deserve to be on par with Erik Pieters. Mihai Nesu (i know he is seriuos injured) deserves more then just 64 DEF. IMO he is one of the league's top DEF SB. Milano Koenders 70 is a bit high compared to others. And so on. Ill wait till Fides or Ajacied_Breda reacts to our post. Maybe we could look at these things and more.

Personally I dont think he such a poor defender. I mean, he started out as a CB (remember his debut vs FC Twente for example? And I remember him player at the Toulon Tournament in the Dutch U20 as a CB aswell) and wasnt totally crap at that. Bovenberg is a worser defender in my opinion, the fact that Bovenberg seems more spirited/tenacious (and scored more headers:P) then vd Wiel doesnt take away that basically every left winger run past him. In general I think the side backs in NL are okay, the downside is that they actually have left and right forwards against them. In England is you are a left back, you barely ever have a real side-forward against you, more often those players are more like side-midfielders like Kuyt, Bale, who also have defensive responsibilities.

But i dont believe its an excuse at all that Eredivisie side backs ar facing wingers. Ofcourse its a fact they are. But that doesnt mean we cant see if they can defend or not. Just look at Burnet he is regard a talent He doesnt even know how to block crosses.
IMO it isnt because there are a lots of wingers in Holland. Its because Dutch players/football culture always thinks forward. Eredivisie and Liga Sagres are the leagues i watch the most. And in Holland SB are just bad wingers, they have speed and like to get forward but they dont have that nice of dribble or LP like a winger (example: Poulsen). In Portugal its far more important for a SB to be able to defend then in Holland. That comes first and then we'll see if you now ho to ATT. The best SB who knows how to DEF and ATT go to the best clubs and the other who just now how to DEF go to smaller clubs while in Holland its the other way around. Okay you can ATT good!..can you defend aswell? Oh hell we'll teach you that! It doesnt come naturally. Thats my point. I mean how many years is Vd Wiel playing at Ajax I ? has he improved DEF ? no, or max: slightly.

He's only ever had a high enough defence rating due to him being a CB at one point, he's never been a 70, an in fact is more along the lines of a 66.

We should look very closely at Van der Wiel and Van Rhijn this season. Van der Wiel's stats are a lot higher now than Van Rhijn's, but there may not even that big a difference between them. At least the difference as it is now is probably too big.

I'd like to discuss his DEF once again, him sitting on such a high value is a slap in the face for every Side-Back that does not suck major balls at defending. And no, I do not consider him having played a handful of matches as CB years ago as a legit reason. Very low 60's should be max for van der Wiel.

Agree - Comparing with some BL players he is like Rafinha, Piszcek or Pander. Even Marcelo from R.Madrid could be a good example. Very low 60´s.
