Ron Vlaar

Postby PES Stats Database » 2009 Aug 29, 22:22

A very talented, young centreback that has been troubled by injuries througout his career. Vlaar debuted aged 20 for AZ and had since impressed Dutch crowds all over the country, often being named the next Jaap Stam before moving to Feyenoord on a 3 year deal in 2006. During the U21 EC a year later, Vlaar hurt his knee and was out for a long time. The 2008-2009 proved to be a disappoint for Ron too, spending much of the season on the stands with multiple niggling injuries and some bad knee injuries.

Recently, Vlaar has impressed in the centre of defence along with Bahia and Van Dijk; having conceded 0 goals for Feyenoord so far in the 09-10 season.

mcmattie gave him orange BB in his set, while I don't consider him to be the most experienced mod I can't see how there's a 5 (or 6??) point difference between his set and this..

He was an absolute beast against Spain, looked crazily strong, just a oak really, both in terms of strength and movement unfortunately..

DEF also looked pretty impressive...

Yeah, had noticed this before.

It appears he finally went from ok-ish to solid somewhere during the second half of this season.

I suggest:

BB: between 88-92.
As noted by Roy, more than held his own vs. Costa (88). No need for comparisons, though. Simply observe. 86 was low even during his weaker spells..

DEF: 82 easily.
Van Buyten still sits at 85. Vertonghen 84. Heitiga 82. Current Vlaar can roll with these guys without problems. Shows comparabe dispossessing/tackling feats, etc.

His improvement might also have something to do with his maturity and getting used to his leadership role for both club and country.
So TW and MENT we have to keep an eye on as well.

BB could easily be 90. And I am also quite sure he is 90 kg or more at this moment. He is huge.

Last season I expected Okore to be gradually taking Vlaar's place at Villa, but the Ivorian-Danish defender was seriously injured for most of the season. :?

Uhh, have to say I do not quite understand where you're coming from with that. I can hardly imagine him being praised and put in the Holland NT for the fact that he's awful...

EDIT: Had a good match against Australia, best defender on the pitch for me, some sharp defending, unfortunately he has the passing vision of a peanut... :?

He was amazing defensively. One of the best performances of his life.

I think i know what ingua the white dingus means.

He was very good yesterday, yup. But i always have an uneasy feeling regarding him. It's as if he's always on the brink of messingup. A bit like Demichelis, but worse. He throws some good tackles here and there, he can be surprisingly good sometimes, but then there are moments in which he looks totally out of control, some silly decisions, things like that.

This is not stats-related, merely how i see him.

I agree. He did play a great WC for his standards. But i believe it won't take long before he drops this level. Still not sure if his BB is right. Seems more like an 87 to me.

Ron. Vlaar. He has been so great this tournament. Today it was even comical and made me laugh. :P He was simply always in the way of the Brazilian attackers. Brazil came to attacks pretty often, but at the end there was always Ron Vlaar (or De Vrij). Really, if he could just perform like this over a whole year, he would deserve a 90s Def value.

To elaborate upon the above post: He's older, slower, and more reckless. Much more prone to switching off mentally and committing an error than he was certainly at Aston Villa. His speed is quite below average and he struggles to get up to the minimal top speed he can even achieve, which is still better than his awful agility. He still relies on using his body to push players off the ball still, but this too has regressed with age. He is slower on the dribble, predictably, and not zipping passes as much despite maintaining the accuracy. His teamwork is prone to those lapses I previously mentioned, despite him being back in his home country and having a partner CB from the Netherlands as well to speak his native language with.
