Seems like Magath is now preferring 4-3-3 system more than the 4-3-1-2 formation.

GK: Neuer
RB: Rafinha
LB: Schmitz
CBL: Bordon
CBR: Höwedes
DMF: Matip
CMFR: Moritz
CMFL: Rakitic
RWF/SS: Farfan
LWF: Sanchez
CF: Kuranyi

Still, when Alexander Baumjohann comes in (usually for Vicente Sanchez) Schalke seems to switch the formation back to previous 4-3-1-2, Baumjohann playing the AMF behind the two strikers. I'm not sure about the starting lineup because they have lot of injuries and some new players still adapting so it's likely to change. Captain Westermann is definately taking his place in the first eleven when he is fit.

*Rakitic has a new positon, he plays as CMF with jones.

Current formation (in the first post) seems a bit... odd, I can't understand it  Could someone update it? It doesn't have to be an ultimate example of accuracy, but I want to create Schalke in my new OF yet I can't right now because I don't know what formation are they playing in this season

i think the starting eleven without injuries would be like this:

-------------------Fährmann--------------------
Uchida---Höwedes----Papadopoulos----Fuchs
---------------Jones-----------------------------
--------------------------Holtby-----------------
---Farfan-----------------------------Draxler---
--------------------------Raul--------------------
---------------Huntelaar-------------------------

Freekicks: Fuchs
Right Corners: Fuchs
Left Corners: Farfan
penaltys: Huntelaar
go up at corners: Höwedes

can't see paddy's pic but the last few games without farfan they played like this:

GK Unnerstall
CB Papadopoulos
CB Matip
RB Höwedes
LB Fuchs
DM Jones
RCM Jurado
LCM Holtby
AM/SS Raúl
SS Pukki
CF Huntelaar

------------------Unnerstall----------------
-Höwedes---Matip---Papadopoulos---Fuchs-
-------------------Jones-------------------
----------Jurado-----------Holtby----------
--------------------Raúl--------------------
-----------------------Pukki---------------
---------------Huntelaar-------------------

With Farfan back on the field they'd play like Hayame said but with Matip as CB instead of Uchida whose job Höwedes would have to do.

Stevens is using the young couple Papadopoulos-Matip instead of Howedes-Metzelder,I'm not up so agreed with that but the team is playing very good,a very solid lineup anyway and the results are showing :)

----------------------Unnerstall----------------

Uchida----Papadopoulos--------Matip-----Fuchs

------------------Jones--------Holtby----------

Jefferson Farfan---------Raul-------------Draxler/Jurado

----------------------Huntelaar----------------

exchange Uchida with Höwedes and you're good to go :)

Metzelder didn't play solid since him coming back to Germany last season so he understandably warms the bench for promising defenders Matip and Papadopoulos, under Magath and Rangnick the Greek played as DM because both coaches disliked J. Jones and Kluge couldn't fulfill their expectations. Stevens likes Jones because he is a sometimes dirty but hardworking player with great quality that knows how to defend AND how to do some decent build-up play by assisting Holtby. Papadopoulos played a decent DM but his passing skills and insight aren't as developed as Jones'. Nevertheless he and Matip are outstanding defenders and they shows that on a regular national as well as international level.

The main reason for the both of them to play as CBs ahead of Höwedes is the vacancy of the RB position. Hoogland is constantly injured. Uchida was never without controversy, the Japanese lacks the quality in the offense as well as the defense to be an indispensable starter like, for example, Christian Fuchs is as LB, often he makes horrible mistakes and by times seems very careless about his surroundings. Marco Höger is a promising young technical player but more a CM than an RB and surely not the longtime remedy for Schalke's RB problem.

Let's have a look now: Metzelder sucks, Hoogland is nonexistent, Uchida flawed, Höger inexperienced and defensively not that good, Matip and Papadopoulos cannot play RB but are decent CB's, Höwedes plays great as CB but is able to be a RB. And he's getting better and better each week.

I wasn't expecting to see Atsuto being dropped (despite playing badly at times), also didn't expect to see Matip and Kyriakos to become (for now) first-choice at CB.

But, it works. Joël and Kyriakos have got immense potential and are given regular first team football. Brilliant!

More or less this is the most used formation in 2017-18:
