Came to light during the 1982 world cup, through a series of excellent displays well beyond his years -- Matysik in fact gave so much of himself on the pitch that he became severely ill at the end of the tournament and would not be well enough to play until several months later. Fulfilled that singular need of every team in midfield, the classic 'disruptor', that player who can nick in and win possession back or at the very least halt the flow of a threatening move, still with his boundless running he offered himself into the offensive quarter, and his clean simple passing game used in front his own defence easily switched into exploitative dagger passes higher up the field. Capped 55 times for Poland, becoming the teams captain after Boniek's international retirement.

Played for Górnik Zabrze for nearly a decade, winning the league title on three occasions. Arrived at Auxerre in 1987 to replace Alain Fiard, he would continue that clubs association with Polish exports, he would also bring a level of maturity and experience to the midfield, as a solid defender he was used indifferently either as centre half or as a defensive midfielder. By 1990 Matysik would move to Hamburg and after three seasons would continue his career with a succession of other lower tiered German clubs.
