I tend to knock Gerrard back a place or two (behind Riera and Kuyt), and with a forward and back arrow, and high defence (Riera normal, kuyt high). Whether that is correct or not, i'm not sure - Gerrard seems to linger at front more this season than last. So it's probably more a 4-4-1-1 really, than the 4-3-3 that I play (though both are 4-2-3-1 really, but you see my point...). I just think that this is the best way to get Gerrard to suddenly pop up near the back like he often does.

I guess we need to wait until Torres is back to get an understanding of Rafa's best ideas...it's never going to be one system, is it..?! And that's for the best.

Him and Gerrrard have been possibly the most influential players since August. He is central to the 4-2-3-1 when it is played, and doesn't leave gaps in the 4-4-2. I think he's very much back to being one of the first names on the team sheet?

Could you host them with picattic please? I don't see them in work because they block all the 'common' image hosting sites.

2 main formations really

4-2-3-1

Image

GK:Reina
RB:Arbeloa
RCB:Carragher (VC)
LCB:Agger/Skrtel
LSB:Aurelio/Insua
DM:Alonso
DM:Mascherano
LM:Riera
RM:Kuyt
AM:Gerrard (C)
CF:Torres

4-4-2

Image

GK:Reina
RB:Arbeloa
RCB:Carragher (VC)
LCB:Agger/Skrtel
LSB:Aurelio/Insua
DM:Alonso
CM:Gerrard (C)
LM:Riera
RM:Kuyt
SS:Keane
CF:Torres

Set Pieces: Gerrard/Aurelio/Alonso
Penalties: Gerrard

Strategies

Left Sided Attack
Counter Attack
CB Overlap (Agger)
Pressure

So, basically what we have is a core of Reina, Carragher, Alonso, Gerrard and Torres, who will play every game if fit (you can include Arbeloa there too). Rafa switched from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 depending on the oppositions. Tough away games, and CL games, it will be 4-2-3-1. Home games against teams that park the bus, it will be 4-4-2.

CB rotates between Agger, Skrtel and Hyypia, depending on who's fit, and the opposition (against physical teams, Sami always plays). Aurelio is first choice LB, but Insua got a good run of games, when we was injured (which is very often), so both can be taken as first choice.

Talking about playing style, Liverpool game is about passing until they find a gap, and when defending, constant pressure and trying to win the ball back up field.

During build up, there are several passes between the CB, LBs and Alonso, who plays very deep to collect the ball. When he gets it, he tries to give the ball to Gerrard, as early as possible, otherwise, and plays it out wide to the wings.

Very little link up between Kuyt and Arbeloa on the right, and but Riera, and Insua/Aurelio is where attack comes from. When Gerrard has the ball, he always tries to find the killer ball to Torres/Keane very early.

When defending, the pressure starts from Keane/Torres/Kuyt who try to win the ball back. In midfield, Gerrard/Mascherano do most of the running, and Alonso tries to intercept passes. The wingers always track back.

When playing 4-4-2, Gerrard drop deeper, and Keane plays a supporting role. His game is about dropping deep to collect the ball, then either playing it back, or out wide. He always drifts wide in between games, making space for Gerrard to bomb forward. Alonso always likes to stay deep, but will take a shot from outside.

Now that Keane is gone....should we have the 4-2-3-1 formation in the 1st post?

Also, is Insua really 2nd choice LB over Dossena? Do you think they will keep with the 3CB formation?

Generally it's Fabio when fit then Dossena then Insua?? I don't think they'll stick with 3 CB formation, but only time will tell. There have been some calls for it to be tried, so... :?

Didn't Insua get picked ahead of Dossena recetly until he went to those Championships/

Tbh i think Rafa rotates the Left backs but if Aurelio is fit he will always play in the big games.

He did for awhile, but I thought that was down to Dossena's fitness levels.

We'll see when Insua gets back I guess, but I agree Fabio is the big game man. He's the best option when fit.

I use something like that, if I want to be a bit more defensive I up the def arrows of the SMF's 1 each. But really, it's horrible to play when you have to do that. :(

I don't put Gerrard exactly central because he gets into better positions like this. Also I have Skrtel left of Carra if I don't play Agger, and they both can do a similar job and both like to dribble with the ball and pass it.

Carra for me is best as RCB as he looks uncomfortable at LCB.

Pass and move, pass and move... ;)
