The Football League Championship Thread

Postby BigStu » 2012 Jan 30, 20:35

First of all please don't post about players being in the wrong club, I well aware many arn't but I'm waiting till the transfer window closes and I'm gonna fix the teams in bulk, however once I finish which will be made clear in this thread you can post if I've made any errors or any addition loan deals or free transfers happen.

Secondly feel free to post stats for missing or indeed outdated players, serious suggestions only please, no stats based on a youtube video

Thanks

BigStu

Matt Miazga - Reading FC on loan from Chelsea
Ocrin, I would appreciate your input from his time with Nantes as I heard it went quite poorly. He’s a member of the US NT and started out a few years back earning a move to England after impressing mightily at NY Red Bull’s and then had a really good loan spell with Vitesse. Since then, it seems like he has struggled considerably to grow further. His awareness and teamwork are often times just appalling. He is massive in the air and a huge free kick threat, built like a tank. Not too skilled on the ball, but not terrible either. Here is a draft set of his I have and propose we consider:

Jayden Bogle draft set

He’s a very attacking minded SB that has a solid crossing ability. He bring a lot to the Derby attack by giving extra width to their play. Still developing defensively, but a good prospect. I would appreciate input of those watching him if possible.

Fikayo Tomori rough draft

He’s a deceptively fast, solid tackling, and pretty good ball playing CB. I remember him coming through the Chelsea system and I think winning youth player of the year. He’s strong and uses his body well to knock opponents off the ball, has a really good recovery ability if he’s out of position and needs to play catch-up, and can make good reads on when to intercept. He’s not much of a heading threat and doesn’t clear the ball out far, he’s not agile, and can get caught out of position more often than he should be. His slide tackling is pretty weird looking and seems to be the style that’ll pick him up a good number of cards, but still does the job. He had a really good season overall.

Ezri Konsa - Brentford

Really good ball playing CB who is extremely comfortable on the ball. He’s a quite skilled dribbler, a very proficient short passer, and pretty good long passer. He is able to play as an aggressive player that goes for interceptions and is agile enough to keep up with tricky attackers. Not a good presence in the air and he is still learning his limits on the ball, but a player that’ll undoubtedly be a transfer target for a higher ranking side eventually pick him up and might be another good season away from the EPL going for him.

Ollie Watkins

Very fast, fluid, and dynamic attacker. He’s really good at flick on and incisive passes in tight spaces. Cuts in and uses his speed and agility combo to pull defenders out of space and slide a teammate through on goal. A good shot himself and not afraid to take on shots under pressure. Thing of beauty at times to see Brentford on the break with this guy and the other attackers going breakneck speed with incisive dribbling, smart runs, and unselfish passes. Sort of like Bournemouth in the EPL.

Jack O'Connell - Sheffield United
Another member of this really good back line, and the ball player of the bunch, he is perfectly suited for the bit more attacking freedom the 3 cb formation allows him. Good and aggressive defender that presses high and doesn't allow the attacker space to turn with the ball, he will fit right in at the EPL level.

Jarrod Bowen - Hull City
Breakout youngster of the campaign. He has a hell of a shot on him and has turned in 22 goals as of this moment in spite of the fact that he lines up at the right sided mid in their formation. Very aggressive predator instinct that latches onto loose chances and converts with accuracy. He isn't much stand out aside from that. With his smart runs, I would like to see him play underneath the striker as a more ss or advanced role to just give him more freedom in that part of the pitch. Surely will be a good purchase for a lower-mid table EPL side in need of goals (Burnley?). Sort of in the Dele Ali mold. Fun player to track and I look forward to watching more of him.

Lloyd Kelly - Bristol City
A good defensive sb that might be transitioning to cb sooner rather than later. He is similar to Aaron Wan Bissaka in terms of attacking limitations and agility in defending, but lacks the same shutdown nature defining the later. He reads play well, is physically up to the task of manning the middle, and a nice potential cheap addition while his stock is relatively low.

Bowen has had some fantastic solo dribbles, clinging onto the ball under multiple challenges, really strong to resist tackling. Think BB is underrated a little at 80.

Good work rate, "industrious" is a label commentators have use for him and as you mentioned his left foot shot seems special - made that inverted winger system work at Hull - he might turn into a reliable goal scorer even in the EPL.

I went a little lower at first on bb and shooting stats just to be cautious, but yeah he’s very talented at both. I think he can be a good EPL player given the current system fit. He is a tough and hard running player with a really good mentality to keep going after being knocked instead of just falling down. What values would you change?

Joe Lolley

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TuZ14zxhy9A Decent recap of his season

Not a physically gifted player, but he’s got a really nice long shot and close control on the ball. His passes are slow and not too big of a range, but are accurate. He’s got a good eye for slipping teammates through on goal or making good cutback passes from the touch line in the box if he sneaks his way in there.

The set captures Bowen well, he will probably move this summer and can be better gauged in EPL.

Agility I think I seen him very good here in instances like he was 84, but I don't know how much it is part of his dribbling style all season long, but at lower speeds he makes a bunch of feint half turns wanting marker to commit so he can accelerate the other way, and I think he does these body shifts controlled and nimbly. His main points in dribbling though are as you highlighted his ACC and BB. Why did you give him 76?

BB though i think is underrated ... But I dont know the players he was facing, and what their ratings are, so was he clashing with BB 74 guys? He has been very consistent in resisting opponents, a bunch seemed to be CBs, so I think its one of his best attrbutes, really rides challenges well and as you mentioned even when he gets knocked to his knees he gets up after the ball. Think 83 would be fair here. Has a bit of Tevez like quality to him when dribbling - dogged.

Acceleration is erratic, not always has it, but many times it seemed close to mid 80s, I have no problem keeping it 81, and just watch for it in the future, since I cant's really peg him from 76-83...maybe he takes a pre-match shit those days he is fast and the rest is constipated???

Shooting stats seem good, lacks some power at distance, Whocored says 62% of shots on target, decent-to-good placement of the shots I seen, his ST is the standout here.

I have a set for McGinn and a few others going to the EPL that I’m just getting to upload again here in the next few days as well as a few others.

Here are some clips of him as I wait to find that set I have again:
https://youtu.be/CwgqpkOlngc?t=89 fantastic finish and his fourth in four games at the end of the season, most of which were bangers.

Charlton United are moving up into the Championship so I’m going to leave my set for Joe Aribo here so it doesn’t get lost in English lower leagues. He’s a very athletic, raw, and talented dribbler in the center of the pitch. Super simple and not very refined passer, but he makes up for it with his ability to win a ball back or pick it up and break forward at pace to catch the opposition out of position. Sadly he doesn’t have enough skill to punish them too much if he runs out of space to dribble into. He’s got good forward run instincts and defensively his high energy helps his with good pressing, but he’s still learning that side of the game. He’s been linked with some higher profile sides and could be a good developmental prospect given the right tutelage. He played the majority of the season as the left sided mid in a central diamond.

Without any further ado, here is my set:
Joe Aribo
Attack: 66
Defence: 58
Balance: 74
Stamina: 81 - high energy and runs hard all game
Top Speed: 83 - very fast in the middle of the pitch
Acceleration: 80
Response: 66
Agility: 82 - very agile as well, especially evidenced when dribbling
Dribble Accuracy: 80 - keeps really good control of the ball and combines with agility and speed to beat opponents
Dribble Speed: 78
Short Pass Accuracy: 72 - very basic and loose passer
Short Pass Speed: 69 - hits them too slow too often and allows them to be intercepted at even lower levels
Long Pass Accuracy: 68 - he can hit them generally on target when given space
Long Pass Speed: 65 - they float and he needs to hit them into low pressure situations
Shot Accuracy: 66 - pops up with some well placed shots here and there
Shot Power: 75 - not much power
Shot Technique: 66
Free Kick Accuracy: 60
Curling: 64
Header: 70 - scores a few easy headers and some decent ones
Jump: 66
Technique: 76 - needs work as it can let him down more than it should for a player with his on the ball quality
Aggression: 76 - above average aggression for the position
Mentality: 63
Keeper Skills: 50
Teamwork: 63

Edit: he signed with Rangers on a free transfer

Here are three players from Hull City that play a good deal for them:

Reece Burke:
He has pretty good positioning and can stay locked in better than the other CBs at Hull, but does not stand out in response or tackling. Mostly a smart defender instead of a skilled one. He avoids the mistake a lot of his teammates have and does not jump into tackles or foul stupidly and overall has a more reserved style where he isn't going for a lot of interceptions or making risky plays. His passing is very bland and he is the sort to just punt the ball out of the back even if there are options available to play with. Versatile enough to line up at CB and RB, he has some above average CB speed on him.

Very limited as a passer and very prone to drifting out of the game and just failing to do the simple things like stepping to the ball when it's being passed to him. He makes good runs through the box and in the attacking third in general and plays well off his teammates. He contributes all over the pitch as a flexible piece and even if he is failing to do stuff correctly in possession he is always running and at least making it seem like his intentions are good even when the execution is poor. https://youtu.be/fxvZcNDHyzw?t=450 aslo hit this really nice shot at the end of the season.

Jordy de Wijs:
A more aggressive and error prone CB than Burke, he is more dominating physically and capable of being decent enough to keep around in the position as a partner to Burke until they can upgrade the position. He is bailed out a lot by having Burke as his partner. Some of his errors are mind boggling and he can fold when pressured on the ball. Intercepts more balls and has more tackles, but less safe as an overall defender as I will highlight below.
Here are some of those just defensive lapses and clips of him:

https://youtu.be/1HUlnQFwc1w?t=164 really poor attempted challenge

Jota - Birmingham City -> Aston Villa
Vert talented crosser of the ball, Jota provided excellent services each time I watched him play for the attacking duo of Adams and Jutkiewicz. He was the only source of creativity in the midfield and will be something that Villa don't have: a winger that does more than dribble endlessly. Very good passer, decent dribbler, not too speedy, not too good defensively, very good set piece taker, and slightly above average shooter. He cuts in a lot to find pockets of space and will likely be a very smart partner for Grealish that will interchange with him to cause havoc. He is left foot heavily dominant and is always cutting in to provide deep crosses from the flank. I will leave below my working draft of him.

Matt Grimes - Swansea City

Metronome of the Swansea side that are back to playing attractive football again. He sits deep and dictates their play by swinging the ball from side to side with an array of driven long balls and smart short passes. He does not turn over the ball very easily and does a good job when under pressure to get it out to a teammate. He covers CB and LB as well as his natural position now of DM. I read he was a flop at Leeds and then has certainly rebranded himself from a poorer left back to one of the better passers in the Championship and full of confidence. Limited attacking contributions, aside from the odd long shot, and still developing as a defender. Definitely better when he has physical runners next to him and the fast wingers to play probing balls to.

Kenny McLean - Norwich

Out injured for the majority of the first part of the season and then came back to be a nice and tidy effective midfielder that added to their abundance of riches in the mid. Member of the Scottish NT as well. Sharp passer, good passing range, and overall well rounded.
