He's experiencing a natural (yet unexpectedly smooth) downfall in physical terms for his age, yet his temper and willingness to boost his level when the going gets tough is something remarkable on him.
That's what I've seen the few times that I watched Udinese last season, and that's how he looked at the last WC. When Switzerland was losing 1-0 to Brazil, he kept a susbtantial, consistent raise in his form instead of giving up. But he was so exhausted from 70th minute that he had to be subbed with Denis Zakaria, who's more suitable as a box-to-box DMF than as a defensive-minded DMF in spite of his physical traits and speed. And Switzerland struggled a bit to keep the scoresheet leveled since then.
