Gustav Lehner was a Croatian player with Jewish origins born in Osijek (Austria-Hungary in that time) at 17th February 1913.

He began his career in Slavija Osijek in 1930. and stayed there until 1934. He moved to powerful BSK Beograd and won 3 leagues, in 1935., 1936. and 1939. Stayed there until World War II, when he moved to HSK Gradjanski Zagreb, and played for Croatia. After war, he moved to Proleter, and retired in 1949.

Lehner was used mostly as left wing-half and occasionally as right wing-half and centre-half. When BSK started to use WM (3-2-5/3-3-4) system he began to play as left half-back. As a wing-half he had untypical style of playing where he would join attack more often then a typical wing-half. Also, when BSK started to use WM system, Lehner added to his playing style helping out his inside-forward in game organizing tasks (off course, he wasn't a playmaker, but he was there, together with other inside-forward and half-back, to take off the pressure from main game organizer).

He was one of the best wing-halfs in country. Tireless player, with fantastic work rate, it was very easy for him to run forwards and backwards with no problem. He was very disciplined and brave, with correct behavior on and off the field. Also, with very good technical capabilities, especially dribbling, and fantastic leap off the ground and heading.

He played 44 games for Yugoslavian national team, and 12 for Croatia during the War.

He passed away in 5th February 1987.

Толе лопове, Толе лопове, Толе лопове, Толе лооопове!
