Alessandro Nesta is widely considered to be one of the greatest defenders in the world during the 00s Winning the Serie A defender of the year nearly every season in the early 00's. He was known for his talent when dealing opponent attackers combining decent speed/agility with intelligence and excellent anticipation, but also for being unlucky with injuries. This included one that forced him to miss the 2006 world cup and for the whole 2008-2009 Serie A season . Nesta started his well-known in career as sweeper with Lazio which he was a valuable asset of the club playing with them for a decade before transferring to AC Milan. His best year was probably in the year 2000 which he was voted in top 10 both Ballon D’or and FIFA world player of the year.

In his Lazio days I think he relied more on his reading of the game than his positional sense, although this has changed over time, he used to be about timing and anticipation, but over time he lost that sharpness and honed his positional sense, you could probably swap defence and response around for this era. I'm not quite sure his dribbling was this good either, but for the most part, these stats look really quite accurate.

Nesta is without a doubt the best CB the world has seen after the retirement of Franco Baresi. A total tally of 94 doesn't really do him justice; he deserves at least a 97. He's been better than Cannavaro throughout his career and deserves a better defensive ranking than him.

I don't know that much about Nesta or Milan or Italian football, but I remember a while ago hearing Gabrielle Marcotti (who probably knows a bit more about Italian football than me :D ) that at his peak Nesta was probably the fastest defender in the world. Is this right? And if so, do his stats reflect this?

I'm not sure if that is true but if it is I'd say then his top speed and acceleration could probably go up a bit? I dunno, 89 / 85 or something?

He used to be a wall back in those days, he was Ronaldo´s most feared rival.

My favourite players of all time is Ronaldo, prosser. I´ve watched documentary film "Te Phenomenum" 'round 20 times, and it's clear that Inter - Lazio were Ronaldo's hardest games, you can even see that in one of those games, in the second half Ronaldo walks up to him and tells him something like: "Hey, Alessandro, what's up?" and then Nesta replies with a quite threatening gesture, raising his hand like: "Next tackle will be up there" and stuff like that, they were always like that, most of the games.

However, I take Maldini as harder to beat than Nesta, of course. But Ronnie and Nesta have a history of their own. ;)

I didn't really remember, but I think Ronaldo got past Nesta once during the 1998 UEFA Cup final and he past the keeper as well to score.

Once? There´s no defender capable of always stopping Barça´s or Inter Ronaldo, maybe a few times, but once is not enough... 8-)

However, this thread is not about Ronaldo, I was just making a comment, to spice it up...

Haha, I'm sure it was more than once. But I only remember the goal part from 11 years ago. I'm a Ronaldo fan btw.

Nesta must have DEFENCE in RED value. Certainly a better defender than Cannavaro.

Alessandro Nesta was the defender of the decade for sure. He is up there with Figueroa, IMHO.

Agree with above. Response could be a point higher aswell; he was absolutely sensational at reading the game and making key interceptions. Considering that Beckenbauer has 99 for response, I see no reason why a world class defender like Nesta can't have 96.

Why he has only 82 for speed stats? I remember him as a very, very fast centre back before he started to get injured after... well let's face it after everything!

I just wanted to write the same thing. Thiago Silva was compared with Nesta from younger days when he arrived at Milanello - fast, great game reading and technical abilities for CB.

Any other opinions on his speed stats? BTW to me he was even faster than Thiago but a little bit less explosive.

Agree with def n speed/acc raise.
About def, Cannavaro have 97, Nesta wasnt worse than him.
Speed/acc should be raise.
He was hard to got past with sprint, even with a speedy player in this era.
Idk bout Marcotti opinion, but yes he faster than 82/82.
In my mind, his speed n acc at least 84.
based on consistency and consequences.

His def should be 98 1 point higher than cannavaro.Possibly the best defender of all time.
