PLAYER INFO
Flávio Conceição came to Real Madrid from Deportivo A Coruña, after a € 26 m transfer, during year 2000. He was bought along with Claude Makelele (from Celta) in a effort to fill the emptyness Redondo left on Real Madrid's midfield. It has to be said that Flavio's performance was nothing special considering he only played 45 times with Real's shirt in 3 seasons and only scored once for us, a rocket from long range, against Sevilla in La Liga.
I have to say that despite his crappy numbers at Madrid, Flavio was a decent player, I enjoyed watching him with my team during these years. He had a good pass, on both modalities, short and long range, as well as a decent defensive game and a powerful shot that hardly ever hit the target, as coach Wanderley Luxemburgo would often say about him during his time at Palmeiras.
In 2003-04, he was loaned to German side Borussia Dortmund, and sold to Turkey’s Galatasaray S.K. in the following season. In his first season with Galatasaray, Conceição won the Turkish Cup but failed to make the Champions League, thus activating a clause in his contract which allowed him to leave, and he joined Panathinaikos FC. Afflicted with injuries and loss of form, he was released by Pana and retired after that season, at 32.
Also, internationally, Conceição earned 64 caps (9 goals) for Brazil, and was part of the nation’s 1997 and 1999 Copa América winning sides. In addition, he won a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
He was a part of The Galacticos era, but never a Galactico.
Honours at Real Madrid>
- 2 Liga titles (2000/01, 2002/03)
- 2002 Champions League
