Catania striker Jorge Martinez has been left out of coach Oscar Tabarez's 23-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa.

Martinez has recently been linked with a move to Lazio, but will not get the chance to showcase his talent on a global stage after being dropped by Tabarez.

From his provisional 26-man squad, Tabarez has also decided to leave midfield duo Jorge Rodriguez and Alvaro Gonzalez out of his plans.

Rodriguez and Gonzalez had been unexpected inclusions in the preliminary party but have been unable to force their way into the final squad.

Meanwhile, Tabarez has expressed his satisfaction with how his team's preparations for the tournament have been progressing.

Tabarez said: "We have no injury concerns and everyone looks in good shape.

"Certain players that may have arrived with less playing time like (Juventus defender Martin) Caceres still have two weeks to improve their condition.

"We will begin working on Thursday focusing on the tactics and concepts before our opening game against France.

"Our aim is to do a good job at the World Cup and I have it very clear in my mind what we need to do."

Uruguay face France in their opening game of Group A on 11th June before fixtures against hosts South Africa and Mexico.

Uruguay squad:

Goalkeepers: Fernando Muslera (Lazio), Juan-Guillermo Castillo (Cali), Martin Silva (Defensor Sporting)

Defenders: Diego Lugano (Fenerbahce), Diego Godin (Villarreal), Andres Scotti (Colo Colo), Jorge Fucile (Porto), Martin Caceres (Juventus), Mauricio Victorino (Universidad de Chile), Maximiliano Pereira (Benfica)

Midfielders: Walter Gargano (Napoli), Egidio Arevalo-Rios (Penarol), Sebastian Eguren (AIK Stockholm), Diego Perez (Monaco), Alvaro Pereira (Porto), Alvaro Fernandez (Universidad de Chile), Ignacio Gonzalez (Valencia), Nicolas Lodeiro (Ajax)

Strikers: Sebastian Fernandez (Banfield), Luis Suarez (Ajax), Diego Forlan (Atletico Madrid), Sebastian Abreu (Botafogo), Edinson Cavani (Palermo).

Rodriguez from Porto is not a part of the NT? I'm quite surprised.

I think he still should have been in the squad.

Uruguay have a good chance of progressing to the 2nd round. And in the 3rd match of the group stage, he could be very useful.

Great player.

Tabarez will use a 3-4-1-2 against France.
It could look like that:

Starting 11 for the first match:

GK: Muslera
RCB: Victorino
CB: Lugano ©
LCB: Godín
RDMF: Perez
LDMF: Arévalo Ríos
RWB: Maxi Pereira
LWB: Alvaro Pereira
AMF: I. González
SS: Suarez
CF: Forlan

What about updating first post, but maybe keeping Cáceres (RCB) and Gargano (LDMF)?

PS: please complete my formation, I don't know the offensive arrows for each player.

I made like this.
----------------Suares(CF)----------------------
-----------------------------------Cavani(RW)--
---------------------Forlan(SS)-----------------
---------------------------------------------------
A.Pereira(LM)-----------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------
----------------------------D.Perez(DM)--------
---------------Arevalo(DM)---------------------
--------------------------------------------------
Fucile(LB)-------------------------M.Pereira(RB)
-----------Godin(CB)-----Lugano(CB)---------
--------------------------------------------------
------------------Musulera(GK)----------------

Forlan does playmaking role. and Suares is Finisher.
Cavani covers right side well and send good cross to Suares. So I set him RW. see it.

Look, my friend you have right points but they are already what I thought in the formation in the first post. Be sure that I've watched all the matches of Uruguay and I've seen Cavani as a RMF which helps both defence and attack so much. So that's why I put him the arrows in the actual set. The same goes to Forlan, you just think like me. He is kinda playmaker of the team. I'm talking by the results of the tests I've made on the formation in the first post now, when they're on defence Forlan will track back with the defence arrow as he does in real life and this will let him be around midfield and will help him turning to a playmaker in the attack beginnings. Suarez is not a CF. CF is kinda paceless player who mostly is around the penalty area in the attacks or crosses. You can say me "hey look at the goal, he's in penalty area!" but if you watched their whole game, you could clearly see that Suarez covering the front area so much, both left and right flanks. So many times he's helping out the other players in playmaking. Also it would be good to know, Uruguay's main tactic is using pacey players in forward for tiring the opponent defence. That must show us that there is no place for CFs in their tactics.

Postby Oriello » 2010 Jun 30, 02:09

I actually thought that FIFA schema of a 4-3-3 was pretty accurate - I tested it in game with 3 DMF's - Alvaro Pereira a DMF too, as in his thread a member posted that Pereira played as a DMF a while back for Uruguay I always kept the position listed in my OF for him, anyways a DMF skewed out wide he seemed to still join play on the flank, with limited crossing (just like it seemed to me in the past three matches) but lots of defensive hounding. I did not really see a typical four man midfield like in your formation Das ist das!, no offense. ;)

I like your explanation of why Suarez should be SS, I had him incorrectly as CF, and was wondering how to get the arrows to mimic him in game, you probably solved it! :)

Though considering Cavani's stats only have WF and not SMF, I used him as a WF with a high defensive arrow - and he really seemed to play accurately. I had in mind against South Africa he seemed more oriented in getting into the box and being more of a nusiance up front then a typical SMF might be.

Hope you do not unleash a barrage of hate on me Das ist das! Just wanted to share my thoughts. :) Hope to see Uruguay - I really like their professional workman style - in the final, losing to Germany. :D

After watching the first half (vs. Ghana), I do believe that without egoism the formation in the first post is perfect. Only Cavani replaced with Alvaro Pereira (also took his missions so no need to any arrow change) and so Ignacio (also he took Cavani's missions so no need to any arrow change again) plays as the RMF.

After full time, despite players changing, it made me think that formation doesn't seem to be changed all the way.
