Gaetano Scirea | 1978-1982

Club: Juventus

INFO:

Scirea was a graceful defender of great skill and tactical ability. In contrast to the ruthless tactics often employed by other defenders, most notably his paired partner, Claudio Gentile, Scirea was renowned for his class, fair play and sportsmanship. He was never sent off or suspended during his entire career, which is probably a football record for a defender of international level, and this says a lot about his temperament and the level of his skill.

He played the sweeper, or libero, role for most of his career, and contributed to the development of this position initiated by Franz Beckenbauer in the 1970s. Thus, Scirea would detach himself from the defensive line and contribute to the attacking potential of his team, frequently being involved in the build-up of goals, and sometimes even scoring himself. In the latter part of his career, Scirea played a more defensive central-defender role, which he excelled at just the same.

He was one of the best readers of the game I've ever seen. Response 96/97 would be more appropriate.

As a 'Libero', he was in the same class as Beckenbauer and Moore.

Otherwise these stats are about right.

Really his mentality shouldn't be below 95, he was the most error-free/cold player i can remember, really

I think his defense is being underrated. Unless I am mistaken, he was so good that he kept Baresi out of the national team throughout the 80s. I think around 94 would be reasonable seeing Gentile has 93.

Totally agree! Response should go up to 97 and his defense has to be in red area, too (I'd suggest 96). He was without any doubt one of the world's greatest defenders of all time!

I also agree with Alex_10 although I think a 93 or 94 value in mentality would be quite accurate.

I agree with the suggestions, the fact that he never got a red card in his career is proof of how defender was and what skills possessed. His response must be slighlty higher 98 is good enough for him.

No, he wasn't in the same class as those two. He was better than both Kaiser and Moore. Scirea was the best libero in history of fotball. Forget all the
others this guy was an absolute legend. Beckenbauer was more complete player than Scirea but as a libero noone could match Scirea.

Actually I feel his ATK is a bit too low. I'd like it @ 75/76. C'mon he was probably even better than Franz when moving on the field, despite Franzie was actually more technical.
Shooting department could also use a boost in ST (+2) and SP (+1)

Please have a look at some of his goals (he scored 32 goals in his carrer, not bad for a Libero)

oooooooooooooookkk...
now i explain the law and ranking of defencers of all time :
0 Beck 93 defence 95 response (he was a 10 in defence!! and not a real defencer like many other players that have played, however he is the best "libero" of all time but not the best defencer) THE BEST
1 Baresi 99 defence 96response (the best DC of history also if he was a "libero" he knows to control the defence like nobody else)
2 Scirea 98 defence 96 response
3 Kholer
4 Moore/Maldini
5 Cannavaro/Nesta
6 Vogts/Gentile (with kholer and Cannavaro are the best menmarking of hostory)
7 Desailly/Sammer
8 Rijkaard/Puyol/Blanc (Write right?)
9 Foulkes/Samuel/Lucio/Rio Ferdinand/Picchi/Burgnich/Ferrara/Tresor/Stam

Managed to catch a match of his by chance, wasn't looking out for him, but he really stood out. Really didn't see enough of him to make much changes, but probably his def can be much higher, and response lower. Passing higher, agility lower.

He was amazing. Need to watch him more from his time at Juve but he was a flawless performer in 1982. The glue that held it all together and organized the defence while Gentile and Collovati went on their man marking rampages. He did get forward quite a bit as well, occasionally wide positions as he was a pretty good crosser.

Libero wise he was like a mix of Baresi's solid defending (albeit less flashy ) mixed with the elegance and distribution of Beckenbaur

Edit: Here's a rough set im using in my option file sort of a mix of konami's and ours with better defence and passing.

That looks a lot better. Didn't know he had a konami set though, do you know his konami name?

Yeah its' Shirme'. Some things can be used from the set, but clearly some of it is inaccurate as well. They gave him God awful heading/jump for instance when he was very good in the air actually.
Alot of players from Italy all stars (mostly the 82 squad) are in Pes 05/06 so im going to re-watch some more matches and standardise them all.

Konamis looks pretty under-rated. I won't be watching more of him anytime soon, so I'll leave you to it. Just one observation though, are you sure he was that explosive ACC wise? Didn't look it to me.

i watched his games from Juventus (vs Napoli , 1984) and most of his 1978 1982 and 1986 (when he played rather as a CB marking Maradona, something he did well ).
from what i saw, his response should definitely be in the red zone, Scirea has the best game reading ability for a defender i ever seen, compensating for his average physique, he's the brainy type , unlike Gentile , the brawny.
i'd suggest at least Resp : 96 , any other less is a crime against this legend, honestly.
