Aldair | 1993-1994

Postby Vandeach » 2009 Jan 03, 20:11

Name: Aldair Nascimento dos Santos

Growth type: Standard/Lasting

INFO:

Aldair Nascimento dos Santos, Brazilian national but Roman at heart. Started his carreer at top-level in Brazil’s Flamengo, and it wasn’t long before he was brought to Europe, to play for Portugal’s Benfica. From 1990 to 2003, the "Eternal 6" played a total of 415 matches for Roma, who, in appreciation, retired the number 6 shirt.

Fenomenal positioning skills and pace were his trademarks, but he was also known among the tiffosi as a fenomenal and tireless worker. Typical Brazilian flair added some spice to this great player’s game.

Honors in Rome, honors for Brazil. He won the 1994 World Cup and was part of the squad for the 1990 and 1998 World Cup also.

I think this guy is a bit overated. Sure he is a legend for Roma and he played 2 WC finals winning one of them, but in 1990 he was a reserve and didn't played a single game. And in 1994 he was world champion but he only managed to get a place in the NT due to Ricardo Rocha and Ricardo Gomes injuries.

More, i think the main reason for him to be such a legend for Roma is his 13 years of service. He played there from 25 to 38, it's like a life dedicated to one club! How many clubs have had a foreing player for 13 years?

Aldair might have been one of the best CB's from his time but so is Lúcio and he is rated at 85 for defense and 91 for BB, Aldair was very strong but not as strong as Lúcio or Chielini (Def 86/BB 92). Terry is a Chelsea legend, year after year he is on the dreamteam lists, he as a very good goal record, yet Aldair is superior in nearly everything.

Most of his numbers are above average for a CB, his dribble, pass, FK's, heading and jump, speed, technique... and he has 3 defensive stars. I'd like to sugest some numbers but i don't remember him that well (i'm sure defense shouldn't be orange though) so i'll leave that to someone that knows better, but i'm pretty sure he is overated in most stats.

I don't remember him from is time with Benfica, all i know is that he was a starter and he made a very positive impact when he arrived (6 goals in 1 season). Benfica wanted to keep him but at the time Serie A was probably the best league in the world, Aldair couldn't refuse Roma's offer.

Terry has better positioning, stamina, accuracy of tackles, timing, anticipation, work rate, leadership qualities and is roughly the same for strength, although you're probably right, he wasn't as strong as Chiellini. But Aldair was by far technically better than someone like Terry, I wouldn't say he was worse than Ferdinand in those areas at all.

Like i said m8, i don't remember him so i can't really say much, is just that he is so good in everything.

But u say he beats Terry for positioning, accuracy of tackles, timing and anticipation... well, their defensive stars r the same and Terry's defense is just 1 point higher and his response is even one point lower. The only stat were Terry beats him by far is mentality. And Terry is taller, that's better too.

But still, i think u'll agree these stats make him a better defender that prime Terry, no? Do u think that'd be the case? I know that even in his only season at Benfica he made a good impression, he is a Roma legend and a world champion but i never though he was this good ...

Attack: 66
Defence: 89 (Clearly overrated. He wasn't that good in defence; no way
he could overcome Mauro Ramos, being just one point below Luis Pereira. I
recommend a
87 value, what makes him one point above Classic Lucio 2009-2010).
Balance: 91 (Overrated again. He was a tough defender, no doubt about
that, but not a trolley ;); I suggest a
85 value, considering his
weight and height, it sounds fair enough; two points lower than Classic Lucio -
this one was much taller and heavier than Aldair)

Stamina: 83
Top Speed: 80
Acceleration: 81
Response: 86 (He was not a genius in anticipating rival attacks; agreed)
Agility: 79
Dribble Accuracy: 79
Dribble Speed: 78
Short Pass Accuracy: 76
Short Pass Speed: 80
Long Pass Accuracy: 76
Long Pass Speed: 74
Shot Accuracy: 66
Shot Power: 84
Shot Technique: 68
Free Kick Accuracy: 70
Curling: 73
Header: 89 (Attribute just a bit overrated. I would decrease it to 87 -
one point under Oscar Bernardi, one of the best centerbacks headers of
the Brazilian football - and one point over Classic Lucio, still this
one is great in scoring head goals too)

Jump: 90 (Guess what... rated a little elevated, taking into account
Luis Pereira is ranked 86 - nonetheless this value does not represent
what he really could perform; I compare Pereira to Rijkaard
(90) in this subject, but I will show it later; Aldair maybe could be 85, since he was not so tall, but he had a great impulse, as one can verify on the first video of his topic)
Technique: 80 (Every specialist in Brazil regards him as a good technician; I agree with this value)
Aggression: 72
Mentality/Tenacity: 87
Goalkeeper Skills: 50
Team Work: 83

These stats make no sense, they even got his strong foot wrong. BB @ 91 is absurd he wasn't a though defender in the sense that he used his strenght, in fact he was a very clean and loyal defender, jump @ 90 as well, it makes no sense honestly.

Im not too keen on these either. Quite a few requests to update some players from the 94 world cup I'll watch some more games and add them to my agenda.
