Passarella didn't play that WC, he had a stomach infection and was hospitalized.

Well, I have heard that he and Maradona had a big fall out, and coach Bilardo chose to side with Maradona... :P

Passarella had a fall out with Maradona and Bilardo because when Bilardo assumed in 1983 as coach, the captain of the NT was Passarella. Bilardo in that time named Maradona as captain of NT

In 1986 Passarella was in the starting eleven, but the stomach infection caused the loss of all WC matches.

Good you clear that up. :) Otherwise, I would have believe Passarella's claim that Maradona and Bilardo made sure him to be sidelined.

my suggested formation:

------------------------------PUMPIDO-----------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------RUGGERI-------------------------
----------------BROWN------------------------CUCIUFFO-----------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--GIUSTI----------------------BATISTA--------------OLARTICOECHEA--
-----------------ENRIQUE---------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------BURRUCHAGA-----------------
-----------------MARADONA(c)--------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------VALDANO ------------------------------------

DF: am not sure if the CB/libero was Ruggeri or Brown. i think it was the second one, but am not sure.
DMF: The Midfield was a very close circuit from the WB'ks, the DMF and the CMF and the AMF's, they were all very close to each other, like helping them for any trouble.
AMF: Burruchaga played a AMF for both sides and thecenter.
MF/FW: Maradona as a moving SS or AMF also on both sides and center.
FW: Valdano, the CF palyed also in both sides, appearing as a LWF sometimes, as the MF's and maradona appearen on the Center.

Either you guys watched this team playing in the whole competition or you didn't, but don't try to guess the formation...They played with 2 different systems in '86 and this is it:

4-4-2 and 3-5-2 FORMATIONS:

4-4-2 formation used in the 3 First round games against South Korea, Italy, Bulgaria and the Second round game against Uruguay

Image

GK PUMPIDO
CB/SWP BROWN
CB RUGGERI
RSB CUCIUFFO/CLAUSEN
LSB GARRÉ
DMF BATISTA
CMF/RMF GIUSTI
CMF/LMF BURRUCHAGA
AMF MARADONA
SS BORGHI/PASCULLI
CF VALDANO

3-5-2/5-3-2 formation used in the Quarterfinal against England, Semifinal against Belgium and Final against Germany

Image

GK PUMPIDO
CB CUCIUFFO
SWP BROWN
CB RUGGERI
RWB/RSB GIUSTI
LWB/LSB OLARTICOECHEA
DMF BATISTA
CMF ENRIQUE
AMF BURRUCHAGA
SS MARADONA
CF VALDANO

In both formations Ruggeri and Cuciuffo used to swap regularly their positions during the games

Captain: Diego Maradona
Short Free Kick: Diego Maradona
Long Free Kick: Diego Maradona/Sergio Batista
Free Kick 2: Jorge Burruchaga
Left Corner: Jorge Burruchaga/Diego Maradona
Right Corner: Diego Maradona/Claudio Borghi
Penalty: Diego Maradona

About the second formation, in offensive phase it was a 3-5-2 like mentioned, and in defensive phase it was more like a 5-3-2 or even a 5-4-1: the wingbacks playing as true sidebacks with the 2 central defenders and the sweeper covering for all of them, Maradona also withdrew in the midfield even if he didn't defend too much.

you're absolutely right. anyway, as you said, is more useful to put Maradona as an AMF rather an SS, so you can rush into the goal from Midfield, trying to emulate the goals of 86.

am not sure about he positions of the CB's on the 3-5-2 formation i thought Cucciufo played on the Left. i remember him there at the run which staryed the 'hand of god' goal.

however, am still impressed about how much this team pressured the Midfield... the were all suporting eachother, it was amazing, apart, considering Maradona did play in the MF and rushed into the attack, among Burruchaga. 6 MF was a great tactic!

That's why I precised:

That been said, Cuciuffo played mostly in the right and Ruggeri in the left. And in the paper it was like that.

Concerning Maradona, he can be used as an SS or AMF ingame in the 3-5-2 depending in on one's choice. I put him as an SS since he played like that in reality, being Valdano's main partner in the attack (the third one being Burru).
