Ron Vlaar

A very talented, young centreback that has been troubled by injuries througout his career. Vlaar debuted aged 20 for AZ and had since impressed Dutch crowds all over the country, often being named the next Jaap Stam before moving to Feyenoord on a 3 year deal in 2006. During the U21 EC a year later, Vlaar hurt his knee and was out for a long time. The 2008-2009 proved to be a disappoint for Ron too, spending much of the season on the stands with multiple niggling injuries and some bad knee injuries.

Recently, Vlaar has impressed in the centre of defence along with Bahia and Van Dijk; having conceded 0 goals for Feyenoord so far in the 09-10 season.

What are you talking about? Vlaar didnt even have contact with Pepe on that cross.

There's definitely contact.

The videos wont upload, but where you talking about the first or second half of the game? And where you talking about the video minutes or the match minutes? Could you find another example?

I tried to see it on both 7.06 and i didnt see Vlaar in action what so ever?

Ah, it's 7:06 into the match (first half). On that video's timeline it's around 8:40.

Aw okay i see it now. If you look closely Pepe comes from behind Vlaar to get nearby. There isnt that much body contact at all, but Vlaar was just better posistioned. Vlaar only needed to jump while Pepe came from behind.

You could be right. I must admit, it looked more convincing during the live match.

I still think Pepe's 86 is high though. He is quite physical in defensive duties, but if there's one defender who can't keep his balance...

Pepe is well balanced at defensive battles, but when he recovers the ball he tends to fall down to get a freekick.

He might even be a tad stronger then this nowadays. He seems to have buffed up even more.

He was immense this afternoon. If he continues like this (and judging by Villa's overall performance, he will have to) he could easily be mid 80's DEF.

He missed the last couple of months with injury but before then he was doing great. Villa have really missed him.

Looked painfully clumsy and unagile (sp?) today, he was even wrong footed by Lukaku a few times - looks every bit as unagile as guys like Terry and Senderos, and they're both mid-60's for EP. He was also really badly positioned for the first Everton goal and ended up playing catch up (to no avail).

Worth mentioning he looked reluctant to play the ball out from defence, in contrast to all the other Aston Villa defenders who were building from the back.

Apparently, he started off well for Villa, but today's game was one to forget.

BB can be upped to something like 87-88.

It's a shame he just doesnt develop the DEF-side (dispossessing, positioning) of his game at all...

I had him down as some sort of bumbling stooge after last weeks game, but he looked surprisingly cultured in his play this afternoon. He was playing the ball out of defence every opportunity he got this afternoon - there were even times when he fed the front men all the way back from defence, so he might do with a higher SPS. There was also one instance in the second half where he intercepted a West Ham pass, played a one-two with Benteke and then went on this really great driving run through midfield - looked like mid 80's at the very least for TS, as well as higher DS.

Defensively, he looks more like a RES > DEF sort of defender, the whole afternoon he was a few yards ahead of the D line intercepting balls and acting as the stopper, while Nathan Baker was behind him picking up the pieces. Also showed some good examples of DEF, including one example in particular where Jarvis was trying to hold Vlaar off, and Vlaar just plucked the ball from under him like it was nothing.

Obviously, these are just observations, but what I can state with absolute certainty is that he needs a higher BAL value. Easily high 80's.

i swear i posted in his thread while he was in feyenoord...there was a game i was watching of him while he was eredivisie and he was doing exactly what you just described (obviously i've watched my fair share of his games since then), the standout point was him bringing the ball out of the backline and doing some fantastic through balls (in the game which i though i posted about, he had two great assist which directly led to goals and both of those passes came almost from the half way line, ground passes just to be clear). he's quite similar to chiellini in fact, not to many differences between them, apart from chiellini being a superior defender when it comes to tackling...all in all, completely agree with the above statement.

Starting to prove me wrong, actually.

Has been very solid for a good period now, and is showing confidence and leadership aswell.

I wouldn't be uncomfortable with 82 DEF. Maybe 83, even, if he keeps it up.
