INFO:

This is Carles Puyol, a word-class defender and the loyal captain of Barca. One of the most hardworking defenders ever, he gives 100% in all his performances. Gifted with great strength and amazing speed he can eliminate even the quickest strikers. He is also a potent threat when he gets up in attack and he can also play as an aggressive side back to support the flanks. I know the stats look like the defaults but KONAMI did ok with him and I also expect a discussion here. ;)

I agree with Dabo that the gap is too big so like jurgens I'd say go higher but I also agree with higher DEF for 09/10 Puyol, 05/06 Puyol having the superior RES.

So something like:
05/06 - DEF 93/RES 92
09/10 - DEF 94/RES 90

Gotta say I think his response is too much. I still rate him as a 90... but I just don't think he was anywhere near T.Silva. Then again... I don't think T.Silva is really behind cannavaro or below nesta.

The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.

Yeah Thiago Silva is crazy, I'd go much higher for him.

You think RES values of both Puyol's is too high? Never really thought about it but you could be on to something. Or is it just the comparison with Thiago?

Definitely the response of 2005-2006 Puyol is well rated. Though 2009-2010 response can be 1 point lower and defense 1 poit higher. Compare Puyol with Cannavaro who has 96, 8 points higher than 2005-2006 Puyol. Thats a huge difference. And 92 for 2005-2006 is well and fair rated to me, and fits with his style and performances in those days. About the comparison with Thiago Silva, the stats of current sets are rated lower that the sets of classic section. 96 (100) in response, aswell other very high values in the classic section, especially red numbers, would be crazy numbers for any current Cb if you take in account the current stats which ruins the ladders, and people didn't accept it. Honestly, I don't agree with so high response to Cannavaro (100, red numbers) though I could agree with 95 (97 red numbers) in the classic section. I don't like red numbers. There are 3 points gap each red number. Too much difference.
Silva is the n1 of response in the current ladders. So I think is well rated. Though I'm not against in 1 increasing his response 1 point, if his defense come down 1 point too. But, if he had a classic set for the past season I would not be against to a 93, or even 94, not sure, for his response stat. In adittion, I would rate Thiago with better ACC than currently is he rated.
About the comparison 2005-2006, 2009-2010: 2009-2010 can be rated 1 point higher than 2005-2006 in defense, though 92 for 2005-2006 is fair and well rated, and 2 points lower in response than 2005-2006.
So, for me:
2005-2006: Defense:92, Response:92
2009-2010: Defense:93, Response:90

We no longer apply different standards for the classic and 'current' sections.

Regarding Puyol, I don't really think he's ever been a red RES player. 92 is ok for 2005-06... sometimes it may give the feeling that he's close to reds because of how high on the pitch he appears when trying interceptions, but you gotta consider Barça's defensive line was usually very high on the pitch as a whole, so many times he just needed to run like 10-15 metres to find himself in the midfield. On the other hand I think there's also no need for his DEF to be this high, 90 is perfectly enough for 2005-06 era as far as I'm concerned. He had a really good sliding ability but overall relied mostly on anticipation and aggresive marking (note that I'm saying 'aggresive' and not 'violent'). If you go over 90 DEF ingame he starts to become a very clean and effective tackler in all kinds of situations, which has never been really the case IMO except for his seasons around 2008-2010 when he had already began to decline physically but in terms of skill as a defender he was without a doubt at the peak of his career. And even then, I wouldn't go higher than 92 DEF.

Edit: ATT should go down 10 points at least, at this point we know it has no effect on goalscoring proweness in corner kicks / indirect freekicks, Puyol hardly needs anything over 60 considering he's never really been a good ball distributor from the backline.

I believe the attack value there is related to him having Sb position...even If so It's inflated, so agree.

Don't remember him playing much as SB in the mid 00s... Belleti was the first-choice RB on paper and eventually Oleguer was the one who took over the position over the course of the 05-06 season (and the people much rejoiced  ).

You're obviously right but where's that ~60 att?

PS.

Seriously, at least the late set should be extended for the sake of 2008/09 team when they won everything

we should try to be a little nice to newer members, even if they are retards
