John Peter Doherty (12 March 1935 – 13 November 2007) was an English football player. His regular position was at inside right.
Born in Manchester, Doherty started his professional career with Manchester United in 1952. He was part of the United squad that won the 1955-56 league title. In October 1957, he was transferred to Leicester City. He left Leicester after only one season, before moving on to Rugby Town, and then to Altrincham.
There was a time where Doherty's star was rising and he looked the equal of any promising young player in England, he had an astute football brain, an exquisite touch with either foot and a shot to compare to Bobby Charlton. He was outstanding in Utd's youth team and widely expected to be a star but with tough competition from the other babes and a bad knee injury he was denied a run in the team until 1955/1956 where he won a title medal.
After that the knee and the emergence of Billy Whelan limited his time and he moved to Leicster before he sadly limped away from the game.
