well, if he improves in all aspects of his game (passing, vision, set-piece ability etc) he may have a chance. but then he has to move to an average team in a different league, and lead them (single-handedly) to become champions. he would then have to reproduce the same form for Argentina and win a world cup (more or less single-handed). if he does that he will match Maradona. to surpass him he'll have to do something truly out of this world.....

In terms of sucess? Possibly
In terms of ability? No, Maradona is in another league to any other footballer ever in my opinion. I cant see Messi getting much better to be honest, if anything he seems like he could become a bit of a Michael Owen ie. injuries will cause him to lose his main weapon of pace.

Depends on what prizes he wins in his career. He really needs to win a World Cup and shine at that stage to even be close to becoming world's best ever. That is one of the reason Cruyff is always named behind Pele and Maradona. He never won the World Cup.

As we can see, Maradona had nothing to do with Messi (title-wise), not even near. However, in his whole career, it's true Maradona was more of a leader, and one of the most complete players of all times, yet, Messi is also very similar to him, same pace and tricks, explosiveness and twist of rythm, except in some aspects like his passing and set-piece taking, altough he's getting much better.

From a critic angle, 1 Serie A and one UEFA Cup with a modest team like Napoli, it's a really heroic acomplishment, Messi has won everything, much more than Maradona ever dreamed of, but this was with the best team of the World right now: Barça. The difference between them, club-wise, it´s huge, that justifies Maradona´s gap with Messi when it comes to titles.

In general, I think Messi it´s still young, yet he can surpass Diego, no doubt, it all depends on how he behaves in the upcoming World Cups (he still has 2 o 3 WC ahead of him) and with other NT tournaments, that´s decisive to be considered a God, like his predecessor, Maradona.
