Hailed as a possible successor of Hagi, like many others too, he was rather disappointing when he returned to the Romanian stage. 1st some dilemmas regarding his father who managed to burn too many bridges at his hometown, Ionescu was close to be banned from playing football as he broke his contract with his former club, Universitatea Craiova. In the summer of 2008, Becali managed to sign the youngster after being advised by the headcoach of the Romanian NT, Victor Piturca to sign him as he could possibly be the future of Romanian football. Ilie Balaci, former mentor and general director of Uni Craiova, said that Ionescu is technically a superb player but lacks the necessary qualities to play at a top level team. His mind isn't fully developed yet to deal with the task of making a game, he's physically weak, injury prone and doesn't seem to find the back of the net too often. Time will tell how he'll develop.

I`m sure that Grig(oras) cand give them a new glow as far as I concern about Steaua, but also other big teams, I`m sure that there are more players on these teams`bench that are talents but unfortunately are not played. Ionescu, Onicas, Badea, Paun, Cristea (when it was at Iasi) have exploded here to their natural shape, without having to deal pressure from boss, fans. More tranquility at the club, better these players perform. Altough i mentioned Badea, he struggles much, but I don`t think he`s the one who was before, he`s anxiosly waiting for his big moment to score at Iasi, (which i hope he does) but unfortunately he`s not that accurate anymore. Also, with these "implants" on the team, Bujor is fading out easily, as now the balls aren`t looking for him anymore, his team mates don`t pass to him so often. He and Badea definately are not in form. Ionescu is shining bright on the other hand. considering Iasi I believe they deserve to be better than they are now but they are always on the verge of the financial collapse which is a shame considering the great fans they have. I really rate Grigoras as a coach though and he can definately work with young talents which is the current core of the team. I must say that Badea looked really good in the 1st 2 games for Iasi and was the main threat who worked like a mad man. Regarding Bujor, he's a good forward but lacks the technique to beat his man regularly... he's more of a CF than winger imo.

That's absolutely devastating for me.

 Re: Andrei IONESCU, Mersin Idmanyurdu
he got loaned there because of this Yuksel who used to be the physical preparator of Steaua Buc.
He's a very talented player with a very difficult past despite his age. He was considered one of the biggest prospects at PSV but various injuries and his father's conflict with Uni Craiova got him to Steaua Bucuresti. He 1st got chances but after Bergodi got fired the new coach didn't care about promoting youngstars so he got loaned to iasi where he got injured again. I'd have thought that Piturca (the newer new coach) would count on him since he recommanded Ionescu to Steaua but i dont know. Ionescu to me looks like the player who is close to the next step, either becoming a great playmaker or another technical but useless player. Nonetheless he played regularly for the U21 and did OK there. He just lacks the physique and attacking intelligence to be an option for Steaua and his hype kind of died down too.
Having said that, I'm sure the Craiova fans are absolutely delighted about his "evolution" as they predicted that Ionescu would fail at the end and now they seem to be proven right.

He's no wonderkid but he's fairly technical and his passing is quite accurate. He still has lots of flaws in his game and didn't really improve over the last couple of seasons despite a few decent stints.
